Google Earth is a downloadable. Please use Google Earth on the Macs in the Computer Lab (not on the Mac laptops). The latest version is on the lab Macs and they have the speed to operate the latest version of Google Earth to its optimum capability.

On the iPads (iPod, under iTunesU) there is a series of 4 screencasts GIS-Tech-Ease: Classroom Tech Help: "Google Earth Episodes 1-4" that progress through more advanced uses of Google Earth.
